The maritime industry is undergoing massive change as ships transform into hubs of sophisticated sensors, generating data and connecting via satellite in an expanding interconnected network. To enable the adoption of these systems and unlock the associated efficiency gains, DNV GL is launching a new chapter of its vessel classification rules: digital functionalities. The new chapter was launched with three new ratings (D-INF, DDV, REW) on October 28 and will come into effect on January 1, 2021. In addition, a new intelligent vessel rating (Smart) – a framework for assessing and viewing digital characteristics of the vessel – was introduced.

Ships, their systems and components are now increasingly connected to the internet, making them accessible from anywhere and part of a network of online maritime assets. This gives industry access to real-time data, enabling increased automation, decision support, remote monitoring, and overall improvement in security and performance. At the same time, this data – collected in cloud storage and used as the basis for digital twins and other operational, design and build simulations – is having a dramatic effect on how the industry views information, while opening up new business models and risks. .

“The pandemic has sparked a renaissance in the maritime industry, as we are witnessing a growing adoption of digital solutions to improve safety, sustainability and efficiency,” said Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV GL – Maritime. “The key to maximizing the potential of these digital technologies and strategies is to make it easier for businesses to build trust. With the new chapter Digital Features, we have laid a clear class basis for three of the most essential building blocks of maritime digitization. “

The Digital Characteristics chapter (Pt.6 Ch.11) is supported by two new DNV GL class guidelines and defines the basic characteristics of an intelligent vessel and how new digital solutions can be implemented to unlock new efficiencies and opportunities. The three initial ratings proposed are: Data Collection Infrastructure – “D-INF”; Data Based Verification – “DDV”; and remote witness readiness / network and connectivity – “REW”.

The class notation “D-INF” – Data Collection Infrastructure and Vessel Connectivity defines the requirements for the complete data collection infrastructure, including an on-board data server, a data relay component and a data server. remote data, as well as the earth connection. This applies to on-board equipment delivered by the yard and owner when applied for classroom purposes.

Data-Based Verification Principles for Remote Surveys – “DDV”, defines the requirements for the collection, processing and delivery of the collected data to ensure the quality of this data for use in a classroom assessment. This means that for the specified systems, the verified data can be used in the certification and classification of these systems in marine and offshore vessels. The scoring covers several different verification methods, including self-verification systems and digital twins.

Network and Connectivity Remote Observation Preparation – “REW”, provides the requirements for systems and solutions used in remote observation. To allow remote interaction with technical experts, the rating describes the onboard arrangements for live streaming throughout the vessel. Two qualifiers denote real-time observation functionality, remote test functions, and system display information (HMI) sharing, with or without remote system control enabled.

Finally, “intelligent ship” (Pt.6 Ch.5 Sec.24) is a voluntary notation which provides a framework for evaluating and visualizing the numerical characteristics of ships. The three qualifiers (OPM, OPH and EEN) demonstrate that a vessel uses improvements that improve operations, efficiency and reduce environmental impacts.

The new chapters and 4 class ratings were launched on October 28 and will go into effect on January 1, 2021.
