LAREDO, Tx (KGNS) — Now that the summer travel season is officially underway, the Texas Department of Transportation wants to make sure drivers are safe while on the roads.

Last year, more than 1,500 Texans were killed in car crashes. TxDot says these numbers are alarming and haven’t been seen in over 40 years.

In order to reduce these statistics, TxDOT is launching its Be Safe, Drive Smart campaign.

TxDOT’s Raul Leal says the campaign will help drivers planning road trips this summer.

He reiterates the importance of respecting the speed limit and wearing your seat belt while driving.

Leal says, “We work with our state agencies, of course, the Texas Department of Public Safety to enforce traffic laws as well as local and state agencies that do this type of speed enforcement work. , and here in Laredo we have the Laredo Police Department helping, but generally all law enforcement agencies help with this kind of work if people are speeding up so they can stop them.

This campaign is part of Operation Slowdown, which runs from June 7 to June 21.

TxDOT advises drivers to drive with enough time to reach their destination.
